Winter weather can put me in the fashion dull drums. My outfit formula is a sweater and trousers or a sweater and jeans. But a great coat or jacket can add style to a basic sweater/trouser combo. Here are 7 classic outerwear pieces that never go out of style. And chances are you, already own similar pieces. Whether you’re in the market for a new coat or jacket or just looking for outfit inspo, check out these timeless pieces.
Scarf Coat
The scarf coat is nothing new, but Toteme certainly made this already timeless style a fashion trend a couple of years ago. At over $1100, the Toteme coat is not in my budget. But Quince, Zara and &Other Stories offer great more attainable options.

Tailored and Structured
The structured tailoring of this classic coat elevates the most basic sweater/trouser outfit. I love the addition of the belt like in the inspo photo above. Another great thing about a tailored coat, is the versatility – it can be over an evening or party ensemble or with jeans and winter boots.

Winter White
I do love a creamy white or vanilla when in comes to fashion, as impractical as that shade might be. The photo inspo above makes a great case for why this shade looks so lux and versatile. A winter white coat looks especially lux when paired with similar shades of cream for a monotone look like above.

Classic Black
When it comes to timeless versatility, nothing beats a classic black coat. Need I say (write) more? !!

Sidenote: I own and love this coat in navy.
Camel Coat
Another versatile option. If the idea of a winter white coat scares you, a rich colored camel is a great alternative.

Leather and Trenches
For when weather is relatively mild and/or wet, leather jackets and trench coats are a great outerwear options. I’m not a big fan of biker-style jackets, the photo inspo above has made me reconsider. Quince does offer a more sophisticated take on the biker jacket as well as some other leather options at a great price. I own and love the cropped button down style below. This is not sponsored. I’m just impressed with their quality and affordable offerings.
