Spring Fashion 2025: Shopping my own closet

The beginning of the spring season not only marks weather changes, but a new season of fashion trends and corresponding marketing to get consumers to buy new into trends. It’s the time of year when retailers will hype-up “New Arrivals” and “New Must-Haves” for spring. As I mentioned in previous posts, 2025 is a low-buy year for me so I’ll be doing my best to shield my eyes from those pronouncements from retailers (likely with one eye open if I’m being honest). But I’m here to convince you (and me), that we already have what we need to feel stylish and confident with our existing wardrobe. Here’s some style inspo to encourage us to shop our own closets from some of my favorite style mavens!

Outfit formula and spring trend #1: Denim on Denim

You likely already own denim top and bottom pieces that can be worn together. This is an easy way to take part in the denim on denim look. And while similar denim toned pieces look great together, don’t be afraid to pair light with dark denim hues.

Outfit Formula #2: Add a White Shirt to Anything for Classic Styling

Seriously, pairing a crisp, oversized shirt with jeans or denim skirt or trousers or shorts, instantly creates a classic, stylish outfit with minimal effort. Add colorful accessories that you already own and presto, you’re good to go.

Outfit Formula #3: Oversized Button-Down Shirt

Similar to the white shirt, any oversized button-down shirt instantly adds a chic factor to your denim or trousers. If you don’t already own an oversized shirt, check out the men’s section of your favorite retailer. Look for 100% cotton for breathability and durability. Affordable options can be found at discount retailers like TJ Maxx, Ross (if you’re in the US) or better yet, check out the selection at your local thrift and charity shops.

Outfit Formula #4: Blazer and Denim

A blazer and jeans have become my uniform. I’ve even been known to pair a blazer with sweats. Pair the two together often when I need to look pulled together and out the door quickly. Opt for a lightweight fabric like linen for the warmer months.

Ms. Grece, my style hero, makes a great case for a cropped blazer.
It’s the unexpected red strappy ballet flats that make this outfit special

These classic outfit formulas rely on classic pieces I already own. Investing in simple staple pieces has served me well and now that I’ve culled my wardrobe down to mostly items that I truly love (still a work in progress), I will enjoy putting together these outfit combinations for spring. A note to self, it’s about style, not trends and certainly not about how many items I own.
